Yoshitsugu Otani was going to go to the front line for the Aizu conquest. On the way he dropped in at Tarui. Upon hearing this, Mitsunari invited Yositsugu and others to SawaYama Castle and confided in them his secret plan to subjugate Ieyasu.
Yoshitsugu appealed to Mitsunari, but he wouldn't listen. Yoshitsugu was to be bound with Mitunari, who was faithful to Toyotomi. In addition, Yoshitugu had a long-time friendship with Mitsunari, with his days numbered, Yositugu made up his mind to give the Toyotomis and Mitsunari his help.
On September 3, Otani’s forces arrived at Yamanaka in Sekigahara. Yoshitsugu Otani, expecting a betrayal from Hideaki Kobayakawa immediately, began to build a base. Yoshitugu arranged for Wakizaka Yasuharu, Noyasu Akaza, Suketada Ogawa and Mototuna Kutuki to take up their position at the foot of Mt.Matsuo located north. On September 15 Otani’s forces waged a fierce battle with the forces of Takatora Kyogoku and Takatora Todo.
Suddenly Hideaki’s forces ran down the mountain, swooped down upon the camp of Yoshitsugu Otani. And with Yasuharu Wakizaka, Mototsuna Kutsuki, Naoyasu Akaza, and Suketada Ogawa all changed sides to support the EASTERN ARMY side as well. Otani's troops fought bravely, Tamehiro Hiratsuka, Shigemasa Toda and others had died in battle, and in the end Yoshitugu committed suicide.
